Lazy Sunday afternoon, footie and wine.

Just a brief summary of our activities over the last 48 hours. Yesterday was meant to be just a lazy Sunday, followed by a ‘minor’πŸ˜‰ FA Cup match.

First activity was a morning walk along the beach, viewing all the desirable beachside residences (if this was ‘Selling the OC’ we’d be talking millions of dollars per property)…..

…..followed by a coffee at the old Wilderness railway station on the now dis-used coastal railway line.

Then back to base, (via The Blind Pig) to take in, as it turned out, the incredible football match between Man U and Liverpool. A great game for the neutrals amongst us (not many of those I’ll wager).

We watched the first half at base but then had to adjourn to a local restaurant for the second half, due to a cockup on my part with the booking.

Our server, Dylan (apparently named after Thomas, not Bob) turned out to be very knowledgable about the English game (he even knew about Stockport County) but was also a big Man U fan. I kept him informed of the latest score, and the eventual result, which pleased him immensely. He was a great waiter, and thoroughly deserved the generous tip we gave him, with which he announced that he would be buying four beers later, to toast each of Man U’s goals.⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

It was very sad to say bye bye to Wilderness, which certainly ticked all our holiday requirement boxes, but the following morning we drove the five hour drive up to Franschhoek, one of the major wine producing regions of the country.

The town is lovely and quaint, and much smaller than neighbouring Stellenbosch a few miles down the road. Our base is the delightful, rustic and very central Le Petit Paris hotel, just 2 minutes walk from the Tuk Tuk micro brewery (now there’s a surprise!).

Being a wine region the town has lots of wine bars and French-style restaurants, presumably a throwback from when The Huguenots first settled here in the 17th Century, so a great choice as a base, but tonight we intend eating out early to take in the biggest football match to be played over this weekend, Crawley Town versus Stockport County.⚽️πŸ’™
