Into the Wilderness

Yesterday we left Hermanus to take the long drive (5 hours) to our base for exploring the famous Garden Route, the small seaside town of Wilderness. Hire car collected and we set off around 10:30.

Mostly a fairly unspectacular journey across country, although we did spot this lorry full of live ostriches (plus tour guide) out on a day-trip. Or something more sinister? Apologies for the grainy photos.

We arrived at our digs in late afternoon,

and the view from the balcony out to the ocean isn’t half bad. I say digs, but we’ve actually got a large penthouse apartment, The Yellowwood Suite, across the entire floor of this three storey building, with a choice of barbecues (or braai, as they say around these parts).

Locals here prefer to bbq over wooden logs rather than charcoal, and never gas, and the cooking areas are absolutely huge, bigger than a standard oven.

The place really is quite luxurious, even down to the jar of marmite in the fridge.

Wilderness is a good place to explore the garden route, with a decent variety of shops and restaurants, as well as the locals’ favourite, The Black Pig and Bootlegger brewery.

The beach is fabulous, with beautiful  sand and a nice beach bar. A bit dodgy for swimming though, and  it’s not that warm, since the water has come straight from Antarctica.

Tomorrow the plan is to go on a game drive in the morning, followed by lunch at the game lodge, so an early start. Although with the mighty Stockport County not kicking off against The class of ‘92 (aka Salford) until 22:00 our time tonight it might be a late one!
